PROGRAM A WEEKEND SKI HOUSE FOR A SKI AFICIONADO LOCATED ON THE ALTA SKI MOUNTAIN, IT IS JUST OUTSIDE OF SALT LAKE CITY IN THE ALBION BASIN WITHIN LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON. THE ANNUAL SITE AVERAGE SNOW DEPTH IS 10.5 FEET WITH A 100 YEAR MAXIMUM SNOW DEPTH OF 17 FEET. THE RESORT IS KNOWN FOR ITS 'CHAMPAGNE' POWDER. AVERAGE SNOWFALL AVERAGES 547 INCHES WHILE COLORADO RESORTS RANGE FROM 350 INCHES OF ANNUAL SNOW AT A-BASIN TO 231 AT WINTER PARK. THIS PROJECT REPLACES AN EXISTING CABIN, RETAINING ENTITLEMENTS ENJOYED BY JUST A HANDFUL OF ON MOUNTAIN HOME SITES. WINTER ACCESS IS BY SNOW CAT ONLY. CODES REQUIRE NEW CONSTRUCTION TO BE AVALANCHE PROOF. AN AVALANCHE REPORT MAPPED AND DETERMINED APPLICABLE LOADING FOR A 100 YEAR EVENT. FOUR PATHS WERE LOCATED FROM ADJACENT RIDGELINES, WHILE TWO OF THE FOUR WERE LIKELY TO IMPACT THE SITE. THE IMAGE ABOVE IS FROM THE REPORT.

CONCEPT THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE SKI CABIN AND THE INTERIOR SETTINGS ARE CREATED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BEAUTY OF THE LANDSCAPE, WHILE RE-PURPOSING PRE-CAST SHELL CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES AND ADAPTING THEM TO UNUSUAL LOADING CONDITIONS POSED BY LARGE AMOUNTS OF SNOWFALL AND ENORMOUS LATERAL FORCES GENERATED BY AVALANCHES.

THE ARCHITECTURAL DNA OF CONCRETE SHELL STRUCTURES DERIVES FROM MID-CENTURY EXPERIMENTS WITH CONCRETE SHELLS, WHICH WERE CONSISTENTLY CONCERNED WITH ACHIEVING THE THINNEST PROFILES AND LONGEST SPANS POSSIBLE, AND AS A RESULT, WERE LOCATED TYPICALLY WITHIN TEMPERATE CLIMATES. THE WORK OF PIER LUIGI NERVI AND FELIX CANDELA IN SOUTH AMERICA ARE OBVIOUS EXAMPLES. LOCALLY, HERBERT BAYER, IN HIS WORK AT THE ASPEN INSTITUTE, SUCCESSFULLY WEDDED OFF-THE-SHELF CONCRETE PLANKS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF HIS ICONIC HEALTH CLUB FROM THE 1950'S TO A COLORADO MOUNTAIN CLIMATE. THIS PROJECT UPDATES THESE EXPERIMENTS AND RE-ADAPTS THEM TO THE CONSTRAINTS OF UNUSUAL STRUCTURAL DEMANDS WITHIN A NARROW CONSTRUCTION WINDOW OF JUST THREE AND HALF MONTHS.IT ATTEMPTS ALSO, TO ACHIEVE A STRUCTURAL ELEGANCE RARE FOR ALPINE ARCHITECTURE.

SITE + CONSTRUCTION THE NARROW CONSTRUCTION WINDOW IMPOSED BY A SITE AT 9,600 FT ABOVE SEA LEVEL IN THE WASATCH MOUNTAINS PLACED EMPHASIS ON UTILIZATION OF PRE-FAB CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES. THE STRUCTURAL SHELL, STRONG ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND AVALANCHE FORCES OF 1.32 KIPS/ SF AND BE FABRICATED LARGELY OFF SITE, SUGGESTED A PRE-CAST SYSTEM OF FOLDED PLATE CONSTRUCTION, SHIPPED TO THE SITE AS MODULES AND WELDED TOGETHER. CONVENTIONAL 'SOFT' WOOD PLATFORM FRAMING AND WALL CONSTRUCTION IS MARRIED TO AND PROTECTED BY, THE CONCRETE SHELL SYSTEM. AN INNER, WOOD PANELLED INSULATION LAYER, LINES THE SHELL OF THE WALLS AND CEILING PLANES, CREATING AN INTERIOR OF WARMTH.
