PITKIN COUNTY LIBRARY

PROGRAM AN EXISTING 32,000SF UBAN LIBRARY BUILT IN THE EARLY 90'S IS RENOVATED, RE-PROGRAMMED AND EXPANDED WITH AN 7,200 SF ADDITION ON TOP OF A CITY OWNED PARK GARAGE. THIS WORK COINCIDES WITH THE REPAIR OF THE GARAGE ROOF AND THE REDESIGN OF THE PLAZA LANDSCAPEING.

PROCESS OVER 700 WRITTEN PUBLIC COMMENTS WERE RECEIVED OVER THE COURSE OF SEVERAL PUBLIC OPEN HOUSES. TRANSITIONING OF THE THIS FACILITY INTO A 21ST CENTURY LIBRARY WAS A TOPIC WHOSE UNDERSTANDING WAS CENTRAL TO THE PUBLIC DISCUSSIONS. IN THE END, THIS MEANT A MORE COLLABORATIVE, SOCIAL LIBRARY WITH FLEXIBLE MEETING SPACES OF ALL SIZES. THE DESIGN TEAM FELT THAT 'ILLUSTRATIONS' WERE PREFFERED OVER COMPUTER GENERATED RENDERINGS FOR USE IN A PUBLIC FORUM.

RESOLUTION THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE EXPANSION AND REORGANIZATION TO THE PITKIN COUNTY LIBRARY IS EMBEDED IN THE AESTHETICS OF ASPEN'S UNIQUE HISTORY. THE ARCHITECTURAL DNA OF ASPEN'S FIRST LIBRARY WAS ESTABLISHED BY ARCHITECT, FRITZ BENEDICT; A TALIESIN WEST APPRENTICE. THE ARCHITECTURE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS FURTHER INFORMED BY THE HISTORY OF ASPEN'S MUSIC TENTS AS DYNAMIC SYMBOLS OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND COMMUNITY CHARACTER, UNDERSCORING THE UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE LIBRARY AND THE MUSIC FESTIVAL AND SCHOOL AS DE FACTO ARCHIVISTS OF ITS SUMMER PROGRAMS.

THE INTERFACE OF THIS NEW ADDITION WITH THE REDESIGN OF THE GALENA PLAZA CREATES AN INTERCONNECTION THAT WILL SYNERGIZE BOTH THE INTEROR SETTINGS OF THE LIBRARY AND THE EXTERIOR LIFE OF THE PLAZA THROUGH A UNIFYING CONCERTINA ROOF CANOPY. THIS ELEMENT IS LIGHT, PLAYFUL AND COEXTENSIVE WITH NEARBY LANDSCAPE HORIZONS.
